We are staying in the town of Troutdale, north of Portland. It is located at the beginning of the Columbia River Gorge and when Bill booked it, we had the plan of driving up the gorge and hiking the various trails. We set out this morning with the blessings of the Troutdale Tourist Information staff and only got started before deciding that the snow was going to win! If there was any possibility of seeing the spectacular falls, we might have braved it but the ceiling was low and the snow increasing. I wanted to take a picture of the one waterfall we saw - an ice sculpture - but we couldn't stop on the treacherous highway!
So, plan B: Powell's! We spent two hours browsing the world-famous bookstore and thinking we'd died and gone to heaven. We stopped at the entry desk and were handed a map! Bill browsed the finance and travel sections. Of course I spent most of my time in the children's section but managed to check out fiction and new releases before we sat down in the coffee shop and along with everyone else savoured our finds.
